Found it on the shelf at a CD store in Ottawa. I'll try to write a review some time this week. |

KMFDM's 2007 album Tohuvabohu boasted an updated sound that mixed the group's signature industrial rock with the more electronic style of the new "Techno Body Music" scene, which KMFDM helped usher in by touring with their aggro-dance labelmates Combichrist. Tohuvabohu gave KMFDM renewed "relevance" to dark alternative dance floors while simultaneously giving actual TBM an ultra-heavy kick to the ass, but what would its remix album sound like?
Brimborium begins with "Tohuvabohu (MS-20 Mix)" by the aforementioned Combichrist, and I feel I underestimated him before. This is great modern ultra-heavy body music, using machine-gun speed manipulated chugging guitars mixed in with a variety of loopy, screechy synths to make for a very intense opener. I'll never get into the dumb persona and lyrics of Combichrist's own music, but I'll reluctantly give him some credit as a remixer. You'll probably hear this a lot at industrial clubs.
Also impressive are the three mixes by members of KMFDM. Sascha's "Superpower (Buttfunk Mix)" continues KMFDM's venture into retro funk territory, complete with the added simulation of being on vinyl. Extra layers of "buttfunk" grooves make this another really fun dance track. Some people may also be pleased to hear that we now have a version of "Superpower" without the Fan Phone samples! Jules' track "Headcase (Hallowe'en Mix)" chooses add a dark, guitar-focused approach to the song, which might make the original seem like the club mix instead. I like how Jules added some effective pauses in the vocals and moved them around a bit without making them sound obviously remixed. Finally, Steve White's "I Am What I Am (The One And Only Mix)" takes the song in a really creative direction that sounds unlike any KMFDM track, and pretty far removed from industrial dance music in general. I don't want to spoil the surprise by describing it, so I'll just say this is a very beautiful, emotional epic of a remix. It sounds like he redid pretty much everything except Lucia's vocals, and it changes the feel of the lyrics.
Elsewhere on the disc, the approach to remixes is varied. Die Krupps' "Looking For Strange (Super Strange Mix)" is an enjoyable but rather conservative remix that adds some newly recorded guitars and keyboards, but ultimately remains in the same general style that the song was originally released in. "Saft Und Kraft (Saft Und Crack Mix)" by DJ? Acucrack has the predictable addition of some breakbeats, and some fun with vocal distortion that's really badass in a kind of cartoony way. Brimborium also covers some new territory for KMFDM by getting into that hip indie-electro type of mix that Nine Inch Nails featured on last year's Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D. New collaborator Velox Music is the the leading proponent of this style here, with "Spit Or Swallow (Fix Mix)" having an opening beat quite reminiscent of Olof Dreijer's extended mix of "Me I'm Not" (but with the guitars and vocals on top this time). 16 Volt's excellently aggressive "Not In My Name (Check Yourself Mix)" would also fit in well beside Nine Inch Nails. Sadly, the remix portion of the album ends with a Zombie Girl track, "You're No Good (Zomb'd Out Mix"), that does little more than drape the song over a monotonous "oontz oontz oontz" club beat. Zombie Girl fans might like it, but I think this approach sounds dated and lame compared to the more creative remixes heard previously.
Oh, and also Angelspit is on here. One of the mixes has been floating around online for a while, and the other is just mediocre.
The final track of Brimborium is a previously unreleased KMFDM track, "What We Do For You." This track consists of Sascha's spoken introduction to the Fan Phone project, and a bunch of goofy phone calls recieved from KMFDM fans trying desperately to be amusing. That's all. No guitars, no synths, no avant-garde cut-up techniques. Just listening to the messages as you'd hear them on a regular answering machine. I wouldn't mind this as an untitled hidden thing on the end of the CD, but it clearly doesn't live up to the hype it's been given as a new KMFDM song. Of course, you'll love it if you're in it.
To sum up, Brimborium is less consistent than Tohuvabohu, but it does have some amazing remixes that I would recommend buying it for. Following in the tradition of KMFDM's many previous releases, Brimborium continues to bring fresh styles and genres to the music of the "Ultra Heavy Beat."
PS. Fuck the Sens indeed. |

Well damn, I was really hoping for perhaps something sounding a tad retro, sort of like Los Ninos (even though it's a cover of a song that Friede was based on), but I guess I'll just have to go back to sitting on my hand till it goes numb to satisfy me... |

| It sounds like every song on here is just about worth listening to (except the Youre no Good remix since I neither like that song nor do I like Zombie Girl, Boo). Ive only heard both the Looking for Strange and Tohuvabohu remixes and Im only excited to hear the rest. |

Have you ever given yourself a Stranger?
But anyway, this actually sounds pretty cool. KMFDM's track record with remixes is hit or miss at best, but it sounds like there's more hits than misses here. I'm especially looking forward to the sample-free version of Superpower. |

Sometimes I'd like strangers to give themselves to me. But what is this thing, the Stranger?
Back on topic, I rather liked the voices on Superpower, though I look forward to the whole disc. I want to feel like a real woman. Wasn't that a good one -- great for the kiddies! Also great for the kids: relief from commercial crap.
I'm serious, I played that song for my kids many times. Some parts are absurd hilarity, others are lessons about mediocrity and commercialism. |

It's a joke from Chappelle's Show. It's where you sit on your hand until it's numb, then masturbate. It (allegedly) feels like somebody else, thus the name. |

| yeah i would think you would need to alternate though because that numbing feeling can only last so long... unless you're a minute man. |
